How this calculator works and what the numbers mean

Creatinine clearance (CrCl) is an estimate of how efficiently the kidneys clear creatinine from the blood. DoseFirst uses the Cockcroft–Gault equation, which estimates CrCl using age, sex, body weight and serum creatinine. The result is expressed in millilitres per minute (mL/min). CrCl is not the same as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). They use different equations and units and should not be treated as interchangeable. The Cockcroft–Gault estimate can be affected by body weight, muscle mass, age and changes in kidney function. The appropriate weight method may vary according to body composition and clinical guidance. This calculator provides an educational estimate and should not be used independently to select or adjust medication doses. Consult a qualified healthcare professional for clinical interpretation.

All math runs in your browser on DoseFirst. Results are rounded for display and meant for learning — not for prescribing, dosing medicines, or making treatment decisions on your own.

Formula used:
Cockcroft–Gault equation: Male: CrCl (mL/min) = [(140 − Age) × Weight (kg)] ÷ [72 × Serum Creatinine (mg/dL)] Female: CrCl (mL/min) = Male result × 0.85 For serum creatinine in µmol/L: Serum Creatinine (mg/dL) = Serum Creatinine (µmol/L) ÷ 88.4 The calculation uses the weight method specified by the calculator. The result is an estimate, not a measured creatinine clearance.
